Alaric, know as Angel by his close friends was the illegitimate son of the patriarch of the German Beethoven family and a servant. His only friend growing up was Anabella Carter, an American girl who once saved his life while his half-brother Seth, the legitimate heir, and his father treated him with contempt and brutality. This scarred Angel so deeply that he repressed his very identity and came to believe he had been friends with Seth instead. His loss of self led him to become a master of disguise. Initially without super-powers Angel relied on his skills and a mixture of costumes and make-up to conceal his identity. He wore a multi-pocket disguise vest in which he kept the materials he would need to mask himself at short notice. He used these abilities to steel and pilfer from shops, market stalls and houses in the town where he lived.
At an early age of thirteen he had excluded himself from his family and lived in his own little world, fending for himself. His Father grew tired of his strange behavior and sent him to boarding school. There Angel perfected his skills further but was soon expelled after cleverly impersonating a Professor and stealing some chemicals from a science lab.
He was then taken in by Professor Charles Xavier who had heard about his abilities, he took Angel to an institute and learned him to use his abilities for better purposes that he had been doing. Together Angel and Professor Charles Xavier created a suit that could instantly duplicate any clothing and a holographic belt that stored the appearances of people and would allow Angel to take on their look.
Angels life with Professor Charles Xavier and others like himself has matured him greatly, now at the age of twenty two he works with the young people who like himself at their age, find themselves excluded from civilisation because of their strange abilities.
